5 Things To Do When Life Beats You Down!

So we all get knocked down and nobody hits as hard as life, right? So what do we do when that happens? How do we move on and overcome? This is what we will be talking about today.

In the movie Rocky Balboa with Sylvester Stalone Rocky is telling his young adult son that somewhere along the way the kid lost himself. Somewhere he started to believe the bad things about himself. Somewhere along the way he started believing others had an effect on what happened to him. Rocky then says “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.” Now this part is nothing new to any of us here we all know how hard life hits. We have been hit so many times. Each hit feels like it is the last one we can take. Then we get hit again. The last big hit I took was after leaving my last job. I had quit to move off to do my own thing. My prior employer decided that didn’t work for them and they sued me for $2 million, more than 30x’s my annual income. I spent months working through a lawyer and they finally agreed to drop it. But that was a hard hit. I was starting my own business income was low and then I had to pay for an attorney to fix this. Here was life beating me down from it. I heard a message. Telling me I wasn’t good enough. 

I got hit. The punch was full out as hard a hit as I had ever had. It caused a message to start playing. I listened to that message for almost an hour before I changed the message. The message was not about how good I was, it was just the next thing I was here to overcome. It was the next springboard in my forward progression. Let’s go back and hear the second part of the quote by Rocky. “But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”  I used to believe that life would be better when life stopped hitting me or at least cut it’s punches right? I wanted the punches to be something I felt I could cope with. I wanted the punches to fit my idea of what I could handle rather than for the punches to show me what I can manage. That is what Robert Balboa Jr wanted. He wanted the hits to let up. I’m betting this is something you also want right? If life would just ease up on you alittle. Just allow for you to catch your breath right. I mean this is a pretty normal thought process right. I doubt you and I are the only ones that feel this way. Once life hits us it starts a message in our head and the message that plays is more difficult to deal with than the hit we got.

Despite this all of us want for life to pull its punches right. We want the punches to be easier to deal with. Something not as difficult to deal with right. But there are a couple problems with life pulling its punches. 1st off we would have no idea what we could handle, 2nd we would not have the ability to progress.  Now I get it, the punches that life throws are not fun. They don’t make life enjoyable.We love to be comfortable and want to enjoy life. We are hardwired for that. That is what has built our society and given us all that we have, is this desire to live comfortable. So it is normal to want life’s hits to be less strenuous. So What do we do instead?


So today’s podcast is on the knock down drag out fight that is life. We talked about the quote from Rocky Balboa about how Life hits hard and winning is about moving forward despite those hits. We went over how we want life to pull its punches but how that would not meet our needs. And we would not then know what we could handle and we would not progress or move forward as fast if life didn’t hit us as hard.

But there are things you can do to overcome the hits to keep moving forward even when they are coming. 

  1. Take a moment. Look at what happened and the story that we tell ourselves due to the hit. In the moment pay attention to your breath. Are you breathing deeply or shallow? Through your nose or mouth. Work to slow down breathing.
  2. It has been wisely said “Worrying is like a rocking chair, it keeps you busy but takes you nowhere. So what the story you tell yourself. Is it getting you closer to what you want or does it move you farther away? Stop looking at your journey as linear. Set up the story that will propel you with direction and speed to where you want to be.
  3. Humor will help you move past this if in the future you will be able to look at this without strong negative emotions then you can take the strong negative emotions out of this now and make it funny. Learn to see the humor in everything.
  4. Accept where you are and find where you want to move forward from here. Revisit goals, establish a new plan. Find the spark of joy that will provide the motivation to move you forward. 
  5. Move! Take action. You can do it, this is what will change everything. This step is so important. If you do the other four without this one it will not propel you forward. 

So There are points in your life when you will be knocked down and Life will hit hard and fast. There might be multiple hits. You will hurt. It will not be fun. At this point you have two options. The 1st one is to  stay down, accept that this is defeat and give up. You can choose to accept the message that comes with the hit. You can let the worry and the story you heard win. You can continue to blame life and others for the things that go wrong in your life. That is one of the options that you have to choose from. This option has side effects. It holds you back, gives you low self esteem, It keeps you stuck and victim to the things that happen. Then there is the second option. This option is to get up, dust yourself off,  Change your breathing, take a moment. Then you can move on to changing the story. Use and see your life with humor. Accept where you are and revisit where you want to end up and what the process you will take to get there.  Then lastly, take action. Move forward.These choices also have side effects. Side effects you might experience are getting more of the goals you set out for, feeling more confident in your abilities, feeling that you are stronger than you were. Seeing the way though more of the punches life throws.

So keep in mind Today is going to be different than yesterday and tomorrow will not be the same as today. Things will be different. Choose no matter what happens to you to get back up each time you are knocked down. Believe in yourself.
