Kellie Hall 1st runner up at MISS CALIFORNIA and Navy Lieutenant said “I don’t think we’re born with insecurities; I think the world introduces them to us.” So, do you know when you were introduced to your first insecurity? Maybe it was at church, at home, or in school. Maybe you were 5 years old, maybe like me, you were 8ish or like Kellie Hall, you were 12 years old. It could be at any age. I’m betting at one point because of what you heard or thought you lost your confidence. Do you know when that story started? Do you know how that affects you today? How about the details of that story? Kellie is a runner and pageantry winner yet she was insecure about her weight and looks.
There are negative influences and stigmas everywhere. They are increasing day by day. In UConn Today they posted “Decades of research confirm the presence of weight stigma in workplaces, schools, health care settings, public accommodations, and the mass media, as well as in close interpersonal relationships with friends and families. It’s everywhere.” Then we also struggle with stigmas around Mental health this stigma is a problem for young people as well as those in certain jobs, like police, firefighters, and those in military service. Why is it that we as people look at going to the Dr. for a checkup or visit is, okay? But at the same time, we view those who go to counseling or want to get help with mental health are broken. They are bullied, made fun of, are on the receiving side of prejudice, or overlooked for promotion? This can be an issue for you even if you are a professional or another high producer. We all have different levels of insecurities at different parts of our day and life. The only difference in our insecurities is what we call it. For those of you that are high producers, it is referred to as “Imposter Syndrome.”
Then there is the 3ft giant. Sean Stevenson, Sean was an expert in the field of hypnotherapy. Because of a genetic disorder he only grew to 3 ft tall and was in a wheelchair his entire life. Because of the “brittle bone disease,” he had more than 280 fractured bones and dozens of other medical complications that threatened his life and he was in pain often. Today we are talking about insecurities. We talked about Kellie Hall who said “I don’t think we’re born with insecurities; I think the world introduces them to us.” I’m sure you have stories of when you developed your insecurities. Most of them have a beginning. The first time you heard or thought them. Often, they then just become a part of you and your story. These insecurities only end with personal work and a rewriting of your story. We then talked about Sean Stephenson the 3 ft giant. He wanted to eradicate the world of insecurity. Sean said that identity is what will make up who you become, not your goals. Let’s get into how to change that.
Identity is exclusively self-determined. This means it is pliable and can change over time. Every action you take is a vote for the person you want to become. Because of this, no single instance will transform your beliefs. But you can change your beliefs by changing those individual votes. You can develop a secure feeling about who you are and what you can do. In order to have what we want we need to prove that we can have it to ourselves. If you want to be a certain type of person, or you want to have a certain amount of money, you need to prove to yourself that is who you are. Once we are secure in our beliefs of who we are and what we can do; then will these dreams happen. Then those beliefs will turn into facts. Because we are whose identity we accept as us.
If we can become the identity, we see in ourselves, how do we do it? The way to do it is through conscious thought. You do it by picking your thoughts and picturing yourself as the identity that you want. You create this by all of your actions. You take action in what you choose to think. To become you must then intentionally take the actions of the person with that identity. You must believe before you will see. You can by choice, have the thoughts and take the actions that will make you who you want to be. It is not as hard, to begin with, you label yourself as what you want to be. How many of you know who you are? How many of you allow others to sway your view of you? The simple fact is you cannot achieve your goals or change the whole of your life until you change your identity. What is your Identity? Are you “disabled” are you (insert a label here) is that label what you want? If not, you must change that label. No one can change that label but you. Because of that label, you allow others to treat you in a way to perpetuate that label. I can’t put this any more plainly than this, you are the identity you have chosen to believe. There is so much proof of this, people like Sean Stephenson. He did not live the identity of “disabled” because of that he was able to do amazing things.
So here are the things you need to change your identity! You must do this consciously. You must be intentional about making these changes. Then you need a clear concise vision of who you want to be and how that looks. Then you need to take action. Here again, be intentional about it. Your belief and action must work together. Appreciate you for what you do and who you are. Forgive yourself you do not have to be perfect accept yourself and allow what you accomplished to be good enough for today. Then work to make tomorrow be better than today. Do not make the identity you envision rigid or fixed. This goes hand in hand with forgiving yourself. Just because you take on the identity of a hard worker, that leaves you no room for rest, or if you are an early riser then you have no room for a late night out with family or friends. This comes back to the 80/20 rule we talked about. Once you choose an identity try to master it 80% of the time! Doing that will change your life. Maybe you want to label yourself as a healthy eater. If you hit that 80% you will feel better than you have in a long time. These tools if put into play will make a difference in the number of times you feel like an imposter or insecure. You have the ability to change your life and accomplish your dreams and you are the only one that can do that.
