How to use Lavender to Reduce Stress and Rid Yourself of Headaches!


I know that many of you like me, suffer from anxiety and for many of you that comes with headaches. For some headaches may be a daily occurrence. I know people who suffer from this problem and they can be debilitating. Headaches and anxiety are a product of our lifestyle because we are living in a stressed state. You might have experience having to fit 28 hours worth of work into just 24 hours, needing to get sleep and eating in there also. Maybe your anxiety is about the world outside of you. Maybe it is about past experiences or traumas or maybe even it is tied to your self-worth. Wherever the stress comes from it then converts itself into dis-ease in the body. That pressure comes out as pain as you are not calm! When I get distressed, I get a knot in my shoulder which creates a lot of pain. Or the tension comes out as pain and distress in my stomach. I have been diagnosed with ulcers from the time I was 17 till in my 40’s. I also felt distress in restless leg syndrome. When I or you get overtaxed, worried, pressurized or stressed, it does affect the body. It shows up as pain!

Throughout history, lavender has been grown and cultivated for its flowers and oils. It has been used both cosmetically and medicinally. Lavender is primarily used either dried or as an essential oil. Historical use includes documented activity as an antibacterial, antifungal, carminative (reducing gas), sedative, and antidepressant. It was used in a study of people suffering from PTSD. Researchers found that anxiety was reduced and sleep improved significantly. It is compared with benzodiazepines, SSRI’s, and imipramine drugs. So the question is what will it do for you? Will it reduce your anxiety, relieve stress, reduce headaches? The answer is “maybe” It might be worth the try. If it works the good news is it is well accepted by the body and is easy on  the liver and other organs. So there is not a downside to trying it. It is best to use a high quality Lavender oil as they come from the highest quality plants and have the most active constituents(good stuff that helps you feel better.) But it is definitely worth the try with all the up sides and no known side effects. It might make the difference you are looking for.

Now let’s talk about ways you can use lavender to feel better. The 1st one is aromatherapy. Usually putting some lavender oil in some kind of diffuser or a bathtub to soak in. This can be good especially at times when you are breathing heavily due to the stressors. This is thought to have a physiological effect on the limbic system(the part of the brain that deals with emotions and memory.) Another way is you can use a spray bottle to spray it in your mouth or nose. I use lavender with lemon and peppermint oil when I am stuffy or have a sore throat. Then the final way we will discuss today is to ingest it. This is a great way to get healthy from the inside out.

There are a few ways to drink lavender. You can make tea from it. Or you can add it to lemonade.

Ingredients for lavender lemonade

1 cup of raw honey

12 cups of pure water

1 to 4 drops of lavender oil

6 lemons, peeled and juiced

lavender sprigs for garnish

Next you can insert leaves , petals and flowering tips to foods like salads, soups, pasta’s, or stew.

You can also use it in baking. Sprinkling them into cakes, scones, and biscuits. You can put some over ice cream or in Crème Brule for a treat.
